Transitional Custody Overview

The Men's and Women's Transitional Facilities are operated by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division at the Maple Street campus. The sheriff describes the Transitional Housing Unit as work-oriented. Inmates housed there are expected to perform basic labor-oriented tasks, which can include kitchen dishwashing, laundry work, cleanup details, and work around the Transitional Housing Unit, Maple Street, Maguire, and facility perimeters.

This is a narrower custody setting than Maguire Correctional Facility or Maple Street Correctional Center. It is for minimum-security inmates who are either in the Sheriff's Work Furlough Program or assigned to labor details around county jail property. It is not a standard intake jail, a full jail roster, or a maximum-security facility. A person's record may still be visible through the county locator if the person remains in sheriff custody.

The captured corrections page is useful because it shows that transitional housing is part of the county corrections footprint, but not a separate state or federal facility.

Transitional Facility Capacity

No separate official capacity figure was captured for the Men's and Women's Transitional Facilities. The facility map flags the capacity as not published separately by the official county page. Maple Street's broader campus has design and monitoring-source capacity figures, but those should not be copied onto this work-oriented unit as if they were a separate bed rating.

The best population description is functional rather than numeric: minimum-security inmates, Work Furlough participants, and people assigned to labor details around the county jail campus. Current population counts should be verified through official jail reports or BSCC data before publication.

Transitional Custody Search

Use the San Mateo County inmate locator when the person is still in county custody. The locator covers the county jail stage, including people held at Maguire, Maple Street, or related county facilities. It is not a program-application portal and does not replace the court order, work furlough, or classification steps that decide transitional placement.

1. Search the county inmate locator by first and last name.
2. Use the phonetic checkbox if the spelling may be wrong.
3. Review the facility location and custody status rather than assuming all Maple Street campus custody is transitional housing.
4. Call corrections if the facility placement, work furlough status, or visit eligibility matters.

If the person was just arrested, booking may still route through Maguire first. If the person has moved out of county custody after a sentence, use CDCR CIRIS for state prison custody. If the person is in federal or immigration custody, BOP and ICE tools are separate from San Mateo's jail locator.

Transitional Facility Contact

The Transitional Facilities share the Maple Street address and corrections phone line. Use that contact for facility-placement questions, visit questions, or work-oriented custody questions. Court recommendations, electronic monitoring, and program office questions may route instead to the Alternative Sentencing Bureau.

Transitional Facility Visits

The research did not capture a separate public visitation schedule for the Men's and Women's Transitional Facilities. Because they are housed at the Maple Street campus and tied to minimum-security custody, families should use the facility's current instructions and confirm whether the person's housing and work schedule allow a personal visit. Do not rely on Maguire visiting rules for this setting unless staff directs that route.

Bring identification and follow all jail property rules if a visit is approved. Note: Transitional housing status can change after court action, classification review, or program compliance issues.

Transitional Mail Rules

If a person remains in San Mateo County jail custody, county-wide mail rules apply unless staff gives different instructions. Personal mail uses Smart Communications with the inmate's name and ID number. Publications must come directly from the publisher and should be routed according to the facility address staff provides. Do not send stamps, paperclips, decorated envelopes, hardback books, Polaroids, or contraband.

The mail source is county-wide, so it fits only when the person is still treated as a San Mateo jail inmate.

Transitional Work Assignments

The research gives several concrete examples of transitional work. Assignments can include dishwashing in the kitchen, laundry room work, and cleanup details around THU, Maple Street, Maguire, and facility perimeters. These assignments are part of the work-oriented nature of the unit. They are not the same as a public community work program run from the Alternative Sentencing Bureau.

Work Furlough is a custody alternative allowing approved participants to work while serving a sentence. Electronic monitoring and the Sheriff's Work Program are separate alternatives. A person can move between jail housing, transitional housing, and program supervision depending on court orders, jail classification, compliance, and approval by the relevant sheriff staff.

Transitional Records Cautions

A transitional placement does not erase the underlying jail or court record. The county locator may still show pending charges, next court date, bail amount, custody status, or facility location if the person is in custody and the record is public. Formal criminal charges, reductions, dismissals, warrants, or dispositions must be checked through court records after the arrest rather than through the housing label alone.
