Maguire Jail Overview

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Corrections Division identifies Maguire Correctional Facility as the county's main jail. The facility is operated by the sheriff, not by the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. That distinction matters because Maguire records concern county jail custody, including pretrial detention and court-sentenced jail time, while CDCR records concern people sentenced to state prison after conviction and transfer.

Research from the county's Maple Street opening material says all San Mateo County bookings were handled at Maguire, and maximum-security male inmates remained there after the newer Maple Street Correctional Center opened. The sheriff describes Maguire as primarily housing male inmates while providing incarceration and rehabilitative services for pretrial and court-sentenced inmates. Some pretrial and pre-sentenced inmates also remain at Maguire after classification. The facility's role should not be confused with the Men's and Women's Transitional Facilities or the Alternative Sentencing Bureau. The most specific figure in the research is a January 30, 2023 Disability Rights California and Prison Law Office findings letter that attributed 827 total beds to Maguire. Population figures also need care. A sheriff news release in 2024 said about 70 percent of people booked into Maguire were addicted to alcohol or drugs, about 48 percent had a form of mental illness, and two-thirds left within five days.
